Spectacled Bear: The Unique Andean Bear You Need to Know About
Discover this species of bear with us! Did you know there are 8 in total? You can learn all about them with us, or with your child!

If you’ve ever wondered about the world’s rarest bears, the Spectacled Bear (also called the Andean Bear) is a fascinating species you need to know. Native to South America, this bear is the only bear species on the continent, and it’s unlike any other bear you’ve seen. Here’s everything you need to know about spectacled bears, from their appearance and behavior to conservation status and habitat.
What Is a Spectacled Bear?
The Spectacled Bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is the only bear species in South America and the last remaining short-faced bear. They get their name from the unique markings around their eyes, which often look like glasses or “spectacles.” These markings are unique to each bear, much like human fingerprints.

Quick Facts About Spectacled Bears:
Scientific name: Tremarctos ornatus
Conservation status: Vulnerable (IUCN)
Population estimate: Fewer than 20,000 in the wild
Habitat: Andes Mountains, cloud forests, and grasslands
Diet: Mostly herbivorous (fruits, cactus, bromeliads), occasionally small animals
Physical Characteristics
Spectacled bears are medium-sized bears, much smaller than North American black or brown bears. Adult males can weigh 220–340 pounds (100–155 kg), while females are smaller, weighing 120–180 pounds (55–80 kg).
They typically stand 4–5 feet tall when upright and have a stocky build with thick, black fur. The “spectacle” markings around their eyes range from cream to light brown and can extend to the neck and chest, giving each bear a distinctive facial pattern.

Behavior and Diet
Unlike some other bears, spectacled bears are mostly herbivores. Their diet includes:
- Fruits (guava, berries, and avocado)
- Vegetables and tubers
- Cactus and bromeliads
- Occasionally small mammals or insects
They are excellent climbers and spend much of their time in trees, searching for food or resting in natural platforms. Spectacled bears are solitary animals, except for mothers with cubs.
Habitat and Range
The Andean mountains are the primary habitat of the spectacled bear. They can be found in:
- Venezuela
- Colombia
- Ecuador
- Peru
- Bolivia
They thrive in cloud forests, high-altitude grasslands, and even semi-arid areas. These bears play a critical role in seed dispersal, helping maintain the health of South American forests.
Conservation Status
The Spectacled Bear is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. Major threats include:
- Deforestation for agriculture and livestock
- Human-bear conflicts
- Illegal hunting
Conservation organizations, like Bear Grounds Coffee Co., work to protect these rare bears by funding habitat preservation and raising public awareness. Supporting Andean bear conservation helps ensure these incredible creatures survive for future generations.
